The Zambezi Delta buffalo hunt with deep-sea marlin fishing added on the coast. The fishing is run by trusted friends of ours rather than by us directly, and clients who combine the two typically extend to ten to fourteen days. If you are travelling this far and you fish, it is worth thinking about.
Buffalo in the morning, billfish afterwards
The Delta concession sits on the Zambezi, and the Mozambique coast is some of the better billfish water in the Indian Ocean. The two seasons overlap, which is the whole reason this trip exists.
Hunt the buffalo first. Fish afterwards, when the hard walking is behind you and you have something to celebrate or something to get over.
Who books it
Hunters who fish, and hunters travelling with somebody who fishes. It is also one of the easier trips to sell to a partner who has no interest in the hunting end of it at all.
The fishing days are genuinely restful in a way that a hunting rest day never quite is.
What to know
The buffalo end sets the dates. June to November, and the fishing arranges itself around whichever weeks the Delta has open.
Billfish are not guaranteed any more than buffalo are. Book it wanting the days on the water rather than a specific fish.
The boat and the crew are arranged through operators we have used for years rather than run by us, and we will say plainly which parts of it we know first-hand.
What you would be hunting
Every animal below links to its own page, where the trophy judging, rifle and season are covered properly. The figures here are the same ones we would quote you in writing.
| Species | A good trophy | Rifle | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffalo | 36"+ hard boss | .375 H&H and up | Demanding |
Also on this safari: Deep-sea marlin. The exact list is built around what you want and what is on quota when you travel.
What is included
Your professional hunter, trackers and skinners, hunting vehicle and fuel, accommodation, all meals, laundry, standard drinks in camp, and field preparation of your trophies. We help arrange airport transfers, though the transport cost is for your account.
Not included: gratuities, trophy fees (including on any animal wounded but not recovered), dip and pack, shipping, taxidermy, charter flights, international flights and rifle rental. Each of these appears as its own line on your written proposal, so nothing arrives as a surprise. Full detail is on the what's included page.
On price
We do not publish prices. Trophy fees and government licence fees change annually, and a fourteen-day elephant hunt and a seven-day plains game safari are not comparable numbers. What we will do is send you a written proposal with the daily rate and every trophy fee itemised separately. Gratuities are never included and never expected; the tipping guide sets out sensible amounts if you would like to.
This is a starting point rather than a fixed menu. Most of our safaris end up as something between two of these.
