Why this one exists
Mozambique is the hardest of our three countries to get to and the most expensive to reach. If you are flying charter into the Zambezi Delta for buffalo, you have already paid the difficult part of the bill.
The Indian Ocean is on the other side of the country from the floodplain, and the billfishing off that coast is genuinely world class rather than a consolation. For a hunter who also fishes, adding four days at the coast to the end of a buffalo safari turns one trip into two.
What is out there
Black marlin are the headline, and the Mozambique channel produces very large ones.
Blue marlin through the warmer months, striped marlin less commonly, and sailfish in numbers that can make a single day ridiculous.
Alongside the billfish: yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, wahoo, king mackerel, giant trevally on the reefs and dorado in the blue water. Nobody comes home with nothing.
How it is fished
Conventional offshore — trolling lures and rigged baits off the shelf, with the boats running out to the drop-off at first light.
Most billfish are tagged and released. The eating fish come home with you, and the camp will cook what you bring in the same evening, which is a reasonable argument for catching a wahoo.
Boats, tackle and crew are all provided. If you are a serious angler with your own preferences, tell us early so the right boat and skipper are matched to you.
Season, honestly
This is the one place where the hunting calendar and the fishing calendar do not line up neatly, and it is worth being plain about it.
Billfish run best from September through February. The Zambezi Delta buffalo season is fixed at late July to early September. So the overlap is a matter of weeks, at the very end of the hunting window.
What that means in practice: if you want both at their best, you hunt the very end of the Delta season and fish immediately afterwards. Hunt earlier in the season and the fishing is still good, just not peak. We will tell you which weeks line up for the year you are travelling rather than letting you assume they all do.
How we handle it
The fishing is run by trusted friends of ours rather than by us directly — a crew we have sent clients to for years and would send our own family to.
We arrange the transfers, the boats and the accommodation, and you deal with us throughout. Clients who combine the two typically extend the trip to ten to fourteen days in total.
Practical notes
Getting there. Mozambique’s coast is a long way from the Delta concession and the transfer is a flight rather than a drive. Build it into the plan rather than treating it as an afternoon.
Non-hunting partners. This is the add-on that most often converts a solo hunting trip into a family one. The coast is a holiday destination in its own right and nobody has to watch a skinning shed.
Malaria. Coastal Mozambique is a malaria area. Keep taking what you were taking in the Delta.
